Lucky Hens was established in 2010 by Alison Thorpe and is a volunteer led non-profit community interest company, helping to rescue and rehome ex-caged hens, with regular rehome days.
Hens that are used in the egg industry are sent to slaughter at the age of 72 weeks, when their egg production usually drops slightly. The hens are worth very little to the farmer and are usually sold for pet food or for cheap processed food.

Lucky Hens works with farmers in the local area to try to save as many hens as we can on a regular basis. We usually hold rehoming days every one to two months, where we will save as many hens as we can.
We rehome hens to all different kinds of people who live in all different types of homes; from towns with yards to country gardens You don’t need to have a big garden to keep a few hens and the girls will be grateful for the additional years of freedom you can offer them.
Caged hens who spend their lives in very small cages laying eggs that can be bought in supermarkets, are usually sent for slaughter at around 18 months old. Lucky Hens keep any poorly hens that are rescued and nurses them back to health before finding them forever homes.

Lucky Hens puts the welfare of the ex-caged hens first and encourages people to think about where their food comes from and to make compassionate choices the next time you are in the supermarket.
